Description
Surviving the Spiders Net
This book is divided into five sections. Section one deals with the early years of Emilias life and gives us some background about her parents and grandparents. It shows how Emilia is setup for accepting an abusive relationship. We are also introduced to epilepsy in this section.
Section two begins with George kicking his wife Emilia out of a car on a major freeway. The three daughters, Nicole, Leah and Yenta have decided reactions to the treatment their father hands out. Abuse will colour their relationship with men throughout their lives. The following problems that occur and the manner that they are dealt with set the tone for the book. George and Emilia continue to waffle between understanding and denying their abuse. She gives him every opportunity to mend his ways. Women who are abused sometimes do not know any other life, and their self-esteem is quite low.
Section three continues with therapy for the entire family. Emilia begins to do more things that she wants to do and develops her self-esteem. Also included in this section are problem teenagers actions in reaction to parental abuse.
Section four deals with drugs, abuse and abortion.
In Section five, Emilia finds a person who loves her for herself. She loses him to Parkinsons disease, but remains a stronger individual for his friendship.
I am concerned that the first chapter is too strong. There is a great deal about Emilia´s her mother and grandmothers lives crammed into the first chapter. Yet, I saw no other way to get the material into the first of the book aside from putting it there. Other areas, I have used flashbacks between Liza, her therapist and Emilia to tell the story of abuse that goes rampant throughout the book.
